Status

Ten years ago, with the aim of increasing visibility and accountability of NGOs, NIOK set up an openly used database based on voluntarily given data by NGOs, which is widely used by donors, volunteers, potential clients, partners, corporations, public administration and the media. The database contains information on 11 500 nonprofits, and proved to be a vital tool for assisting taxpaying citizens by designating 1% of their income tax to an NGO (www.onepercent.hu) Database of which part is searchable in English (www.nonprofit.hu/english/szervkeresesadv.html) is embedded into the major nonprofit information site, www.nonprofit.hu.

Based on the experience of ten years database operations as an NGO resource and support center, it is inevitable that NIOK take further steps to improve the database, and create a basis for its sustainability. Our aim within the framework of the GuideStar Europe project is to assist with the making available and linking of official data (not available yet online) on nonprofits with voluntarily given data.  This will achieve trust and transparency, combined with information assistance for decision makers and people interested in NGOs.  Our challenge is to engage service providers and sector development organisations in order to establish a combined, broad, updated, comprehensive database, which is sustainable financially and provides updated comprehensive data.

In 2005 an exploration phase took place in Hungary and the next phase will be market validation from April 2007 till October 2008. It is hoped that the plan proves feasible and in the next phase of the project, Hungary can implement it and have a comprehensive catalogue of organisations online.
